Grand Junction, Colo. – Strong monsoonal storms are expected to sweep across Colorado Monday afternoon, bringing widespread rain, lightning, and the risk of flash flooding. Communities across the Western Slope could see hail up to one inch in diameter and gusty winds topping 40 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, storms will be most intense in the afternoon and evening hours, with the potential for dangerous flooding in areas near recent wildfire burn scars. Rainfall totals could approach an inch in some spots, and forecasters warn of debris flows on vulnerable slopes.
Cities including Grand Junction, Montrose, Durango, and Aspen sit in the storm zone, with rain chances ranging from 50 to 70 percent. Roadways such as U.S. Highway 550 through the San Juan Mountains may see rapid water runoff and hazardous travel conditions. Officials urge drivers to avoid low-lying areas and never attempt to cross flooded roads.
Temperatures will run 5 to 10 degrees below normal through midweek, with the stormy pattern holding into Friday. Emergency managers advise residents to keep phones charged for weather alerts and prepare for power outages during stronger cells.
