Grand Junction, Colo. – Residents across much of western Colorado are under a heightened wildfire threat Saturday, with Red Flag Warnings in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The National Weather Service says this could be the final day of widespread critical fire conditions this week, though parts of the southwest may still face elevated danger Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, minimum humidity levels will drop to between 7% and 12%, while afternoon wind gusts could reach 30 mph. The combination of dry air, warm temperatures, and gusty winds makes any spark capable of spreading rapidly. Counties including Mesa, Delta, Montrose, and Montezuma are among those at highest risk today.
Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains to prevent sparks on pavement, and avoid parking on dry grass. Tossing cigarettes remains a top ignition hazard in these conditions.
While winds are expected to ease slightly Sunday, the NWS warns localized areas—particularly in southwestern Colorado—may still see critical fire weather into early next week.
