Grand Junction, Colo. – Scattered afternoon storms are expected across Colorado’s higher terrain Friday, bringing lightning, gusty winds, and continued heat nearing triple digits in many cities.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, isolated to scattered thunderstorms will begin developing by early afternoon, especially near Eagle, Gunnison, and Steamboat Springs. The main hazards include cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty outflow winds, potentially impacting outdoor plans and backcountry travel.
Temperatures will remain well above average across the region, with Grand Junction and Moab hitting 99°F, Rifle reaching 95°F, and Durango and Montrose in the low 90s. Telluride will be cooler at 76°F, but still under storm threat.
Travelers and outdoor enthusiasts in the high country should monitor conditions closely. Lightning can strike miles from a storm, and sudden gusts may impact hiking or driving on exposed roads. NWS recommends delaying activities at elevation or seeking shelter when storms approach.
This afternoon pattern is expected to persist over the next several days, with daily chances of mountain storms and elevated temperatures continuing into the weekend.
