Grand Junction, Colo. – Stormy conditions are returning to western Colorado today, bringing a renewed chance for showers and thunderstorms across the region. The San Juan Mountains hold the best odds for significant rainfall, but the National Weather Service warns storms could develop from the Utah border to the central Rockies.

According to the NWS in Grand Junction, storms will be capable of producing wind gusts up to 40 mph along with frequent lightning, creating hazardous conditions for outdoor activities. Rain chances are highest in Telluride at 70%, while Vail could see a 65% chance and Aspen 58%. Even Grand Junction has about a 30% shot at measurable rain before the night is over.

Motorists should be prepared for sudden visibility drops in heavy rain and use caution near mountain passes where gusty crosswinds could impact travel. Those recreating outdoors are urged to seek shelter at the first sign of thunder, as lightning strikes will be a widespread threat.

Storm activity is expected to diminish overnight, but isolated showers could linger into Saturday. Additional advisories may be issued if storms intensify this evening.
