Grand Junction, Colo. – Thunderstorms sweeping across western Colorado Saturday are expected to bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning, raising the risk of flash flooding from the Roan Plateau to the San Juan Mountains.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, widespread storms will develop through tonight across northwest, southwest, and west-central Colorado as well as eastern Utah. Stronger cells could produce localized flooding, particularly in mountain valleys and burn scar areas.

In Mesa County, brief downpours may affect travel along Interstate 70 near Glenwood Canyon, where rockfall and flooding hazards are common during summer storms. Farther south, residents in the Gunnison Valley, Uncompahgre Plateau, and Dolores River Basin should watch for rapidly rising streams and hazardous road conditions. Lightning remains a concern for outdoor recreation in the La Sal and Abajo Mountains of southeast Utah.

Showers become more scattered Sunday before another round of isolated storms returns early next week. Officials urge residents to avoid flooded roadways, monitor weather alerts, and report rainfall totals or flooding to the National Weather Service.

Hazardous Weather Outlooks remain in effect through tonight, with additional advisories possible as storms redevelop Monday through Wednesday.
