Grand Junction, Colo. – Thunderstorms will develop across western and southern Colorado this afternoon, bringing risks of heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning, especially along and south of Interstate 70. Outdoor plans and travel could be disrupted as storms intensify into the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, drier air moving into northern Colorado will limit storm chances there, but areas south of the I-70 corridor face a higher likelihood of severe activity. Some storms could produce small hail in addition to downpours and dangerous lightning.

The greatest impacts are expected around Grand Junction, Montrose, Durango, and Pagosa Springs, where rainfall totals could be locally heavy enough to cause minor flooding on roadways and low-lying areas. Drivers are urged to slow down on wet roads and remain alert for reduced visibility in sudden downpours. Lightning will also pose a serious risk for hikers, campers, and anyone recreating outdoors across western Colorado’s high country this evening.

Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, charge devices in case of power outages, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm activity. Storm chances diminish later tonight as drier air pushes into the region, but additional rounds remain possible in the days ahead.
