Grand Junction, CO – Winter weather conditions have returned to the mountains of western Colorado, with widespread snowfall expected through Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, snow accumulations of 4 to 12 inches are forecast across most mountain ranges in the region. The heaviest snowfall is expected in higher elevations, where Winter Weather Advisories and Warnings remain in effect.
Snow levels are forecast to range between 6,000 and 8,000 feet from north to south, allowing mountain passes and higher terrain to see accumulating snow throughout the day. Valley locations, including Grand Junction, are expected to see mainly rain showers, with little to no accumulation.
Forecasters note that temperatures will cool compared to recent days but remain above seasonal averages, particularly in lower elevations. Even so, snow-covered roads and reduced visibility are likely in the mountains, especially during periods of heavier snow showers.
Travel across mountain passes such as Vail Pass, Rabbit Ears Pass, and other high-elevation routes may become difficult at times. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for winter driving conditions, including slick roads and rapidly changing visibility.
Snowfall is expected to continue through Saturday night and taper early Sunday morning. Additional light accumulations may persist in favored upslope areas before conditions gradually improve.
The National Weather Service advises residents, travelers, and recreationists to check the latest road conditions and weather updates before heading into the mountains. Backcountry users should also be aware of changing conditions and increasing hazards associated with fresh snowfall.
Further updates will be issued as snowfall totals and advisory areas are refined.
