Grand Junction, CO – Strong winds and periods of mountain snowfall are expected across western Colorado on Wednesday, bringing hazardous travel conditions—especially at higher elevations—through this evening.

According to the National Weather Service Grand Junction, gusty winds will increase through the day, particularly in the northern valleys and elevated terrain. Portions of the region under a Wind Advisory may experience gusts of 45 to 50 mph, with the strongest winds expected Wednesday afternoon and early evening. These winds may create difficult travel for high-profile vehicles and areas of blowing snow over mountain passes.

Mountain snowfall will also intensify today, with the heaviest rates anticipated this afternoon and tonight. Snow will continue at times through 6 p.m. Friday, according to the latest forecast. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Elkhead and Park Mountains above 9,000 feet, where accumulating snow and reduced visibility may produce hazardous conditions for backcountry users and motorists.

Forecast models show widespread wind gusts ranging from 25 to 45 mph across lower elevations, with higher peaks experiencing gusts of 50 mph or more. These conditions may lead to patchy blowing snow along ridgelines, slick roads, and rapidly changing visibility.

While valley locations such as Grand Junction, Delta, and Montrose will primarily feel the impacts through strong winds, areas including Steamboat Springs, Meeker, Craig, and Rangely could see both wind and light snow.

Conditions begin to ease late tonight, though periods of mountain snowfall will continue into Friday.

Residents and travelers heading into northern mountains should prepare for winter driving, secure loose outdoor items, and monitor updated advisories through the day.
