GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Slow-moving thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rain, lightning, and localized flash flooding across western Colorado today, especially along and south of the I-70 corridor. Drivers could encounter water-covered roads by late afternoon as storms build and persist into the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, storm coverage will increase Saturday as showers expand north into the Tavaputs, the Roan, and the Flat Tops. These storms may deliver bursts of heavy rain strong enough to overwhelm drainage systems, producing flash flooding in low-lying areas and canyons.

Communities from Grand Junction to Rifle and Glenwood Springs should prepare for slick highways, gusty winds, and the possibility of dangerous lightning. Emergency officials urge drivers never to cross flooded roads and to delay travel if storms intensify.

Localized flooding threats are highest near slot canyons, burn scars, and urban drainage channels. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts, charge mobile devices, and keep an eye on rapidly changing conditions through the weekend.

More rounds of showers and thunderstorms remain possible into early next week, with additional watches and warnings likely as storm coverage continues.
