Grand Junction, Colo. – Strong thunderstorms sweeping across western Colorado and parts of eastern Utah are expected to trigger dangerous flash flooding through Friday evening, putting burn scars, mountain valleys and rivers at high risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Flood Watch remains in effect for areas including the Roan Plateau, Grand Valley, Gunnison and Uncompahgre River Valleys, as well as the San Juan Mountains and Four Corners region. Storms are producing heavy rainfall capable of causing debris flows, swollen creeks and rapidly rising rivers such as the Dolores, Animas and San Juan.

Recent burn scars in Deer Creek, Lee, Elk and Stoner Mesa are especially vulnerable, with the potential for sudden slides and flooding in steep terrain. Travel along mountain passes and rural roads could become dangerous, and drivers are urged to avoid low-water crossings.

Emergency managers recommend staying alert for changing conditions, keeping devices charged and avoiding unnecessary travel during peak rainfall. Communities near flood-prone rivers should be prepared to act quickly if warnings are upgraded.

The Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday evening, with additional advisories possible if storms persist into the weekend.
