Grand Junction, Colorado – Additional mountain snow of 4 to 8 inches will continue through Friday night, creating snow-packed stretches and reduced visibility along I-70 and major mountain passes before conditions improve early Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, widespread snow will impact most mountain ranges across western Colorado, with the heaviest totals expected over higher terrain including Vail Pass, McClure Pass, and Red Mountain Pass. Valleys, including Grand Junction and Montrose, may also see light accumulation as colder air supports snow at lower elevations.

Travel over mountain passes will become hazardous.

I-70 through Glenwood Canyon and over Vail Pass may see periods of blowing snow and visibility under one mile, especially during heavier bursts this afternoon and evening. US-550 between Montrose and Silverton and CO-82 near Aspen will likely turn snow-covered at times, with slick switchbacks and reduced traction on steep grades.

The Colorado Department of Transportation warns that chain laws may be enforced if snowfall rates increase, particularly above 8,000 feet.

Drivers should delay nonessential travel over high passes and carry winter survival gear if crossing the Continental Divide.

Snow will taper from southwest to northeast late Friday night, with lingering slick spots into early Saturday morning as temperatures drop below freezing. Drier weather is expected this weekend, though cold overnight lows will allow icy patches to persist on untreated roads. Winter weather advisories remain in effect for portions of the central and southern Colorado mountains through Friday night.
