Grand Island, NE – Dangerous weather conditions are expected to impact Grand Island and much of south-central Nebraska on Thursday, as extremely strong winds combine with dry air to create hazardous travel and critical fire weather conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a High Wind Warning remains in effect for Thursday, with wind gusts between 55 and 70 miles per hour likely across the region. The strongest winds are expected from Thursday morning into the early afternoon, particularly north of Interstate 80.
Forecasters say an initial surge of strong winds will arrive late Wednesday night between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. as a powerful cold front moves through. Winds will briefly ease overnight before rapidly intensifying again after sunrise Thursday. Peak gusts are expected between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., when travel conditions could become dangerous.
In addition to the wind threat, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday for portions of south-central Nebraska and northern Kansas. Northwest winds of 35 to 45 mph, combined with gusts up to 60 mph and relative humidity as low as 20 percent, will create conditions favorable for rapid fire spread. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
The National Weather Service warns that high-profile vehicles such as trucks, semis, and vehicles pulling trailers may have difficulty staying on the road. Blowing dust is also possible due to dry soils, which could sharply reduce visibility in open and rural areas.
Strong winds may damage trees, knock down power lines, and result in localized power outages. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind hours.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Thursday evening as winds slowly diminish, though breezy conditions may linger into the night.
