Grand Island, Nebraska – Slippery highways and bursts of blowing snow are creating travel headaches across central Nebraska, with impacts expected to peak during the Thursday evening commute and continue until midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for York, Buffalo, Dawson, Hall and Hamilton counties through 12 a.m. Friday. Snow totals are expected to range between 1 and 3 inches, with the highest amounts north of Interstate 80. North-northwest winds are sustained at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph.
Across the region, drivers on I-80 near Kearney and Grand Island are reporting reduced visibility as wind gusts blow loose snow across open stretches. Secondary roads in York and Aurora are becoming snow-covered, while rural routes near Lexington and Gothenburg are seeing drifting in exposed areas.
Wind speeds will gradually ease later this evening, but until then, blowing snow may continue to reduce visibility below a mile at times. Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance and check Nebraska 511 for real-time road conditions.
The advisory remains in effect until midnight, and additional updates could follow if conditions worsen.
