Grand Island, NE – Multiple rounds of light snow may affect travel on major highways late this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, two rounds of light snow are possible across south-central Nebraska, with the first occurring Thursday into Friday, followed by a second round Saturday afternoon through Saturday night. While snowfall totals are expected to remain mostly minor, forecasters note a 40 to 70 percent chance of measurable snow across much of the region through Saturday.
Most locations are forecast to receive a few tenths of an inch of snow, though isolated areas in northeastern portions of the region could see totals just over 1 inch, according to the agency. Snowfall timing may intermittently impact travel along Interstate 80, US-281, and Highway 34, particularly during overnight and early morning periods.
The National Weather Service emphasized that even light snow can create slick road conditions, especially when combined with falling temperatures. Motorists are urged to use caution on bridges, overpasses, and lightly traveled rural roads where snow may accumulate more efficiently.
In addition to snow chances, temperatures are expected to drop sharply Friday night, with overnight lows falling into the negative single digits in some areas. Wind chills Friday night into Saturday morning could plunge to between −10 and −20 degrees, increasing the risk of frostbite with prolonged exposure.
Officials recommend residents prepare for cold weather by limiting time outdoors, dressing in layers, and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready. Travelers should monitor updated forecasts and road conditions before heading out, especially during nighttime hours.
Students, early-shift workers, and long-distance commuters along I-80 may experience the greatest travel impacts during the late-week period.
