Grand Island, Nebraska – Any spark could turn into a fast-moving wildfire within minutes this afternoon as extremely dry air and gusty winds combine across central Nebraska and north central Kansas, with a sharp wind shift expected overnight that could rapidly change fire direction.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Sunday, with relative humidity dropping as low as 5 to 10 percent by midafternoon and south to southwest winds sustained at 10 to 20 mph, gusting up to 30 mph. Conditions will worsen late tonight as a cold front pushes through, flipping winds to the north with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph.

Communities including Kearney, Hastings, Grand Island, and York face the highest risk window through late evening, where dry grasses and crop residue could ignite and spread across open fields and along roadways like I-80 and Highway 281. In north central Kansas, areas near Phillipsburg and Smith Center will see similar conditions into the overnight hours.

Emergency managers urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay any activity that could produce sparks. Fire crews warn that shifting winds after midnight could trap or redirect flames quickly.

Conditions begin to improve toward sunrise Sunday as humidity rises, but officials warn that any fire starts before then could remain difficult to contain. Additional advisories remain possible if dry conditions persist into early next week.
