Grand Forks, North Dakota – Travel across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota could become nearly impossible within 24 hours as a stronger round of heavy snow moves in Friday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, this second storm system is expected to intensify quickly, bringing an 80% chance of at least 6 inches of snow across much of the Red River Valley, including Grand Forks, Fargo, and surrounding communities. Areas from Jamestown to Bemidji have more than a 40% chance of exceeding 12 inches.
Snow will begin increasing Friday afternoon, with the heaviest bands developing into Friday night and continuing through Saturday morning. Visibility may drop significantly during peak snowfall, especially as winds increase across open areas, leading to blowing snow and hazardous travel conditions.
Major routes including I-29 and U.S. Highway 2 could see rapid deterioration, with snow-covered roads and limited visibility impacting both the evening and Saturday morning commutes.
Residents are urged to delay travel if possible, prepare emergency kits, and monitor updates as snowfall totals may shift depending on the storm track.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Saturday, but additional advisories or warnings are likely as confidence in heavier snowfall increases.
