GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Drivers and residents across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota will face dangerous winds this afternoon as gusts reach up to 40 mph, raising risks for downed tree limbs and difficult travel. The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory for the region, in effect until 8 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks, winds around 30 mph with higher gusts will sweep through communities including Grand Forks, Devils Lake, Grafton, Thief River Falls, and Crookston. The gusty conditions are expected to peak through the late afternoon before easing into the evening.
Officials warn unsecured outdoor items may be blown around, and tree branches could fall, creating hazards on local roads. High-profile vehicles will face the toughest driving conditions, especially along open stretches of Interstate 29 and U.S. Highway 2. Residents are urged to secure patio furniture, trash bins, and other loose objects before winds strengthen.
The weather threat should ease by late tonight, with calmer but cooler conditions expected over the weekend. While gusty winds return briefly Saturday, widespread hazardous weather is not anticipated into next week.
