Grand Forks, N.D. – Residents across eastern North Dakota and west-central Minnesota should prepare for thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon as a cold front pushes south through the region. The National Weather Service warns a few storms could intensify, producing hail up to an inch in diameter between 3 and 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the most likely area for development includes southeast North Dakota and neighboring counties in Minnesota. While tornadoes are not expected, forecasters note that isolated severe storms could cause localized damage and briefly hazardous travel.
Cities including Fargo, Wahpeton, and Fergus Falls may see storms pop up along the boundary, with hail being the primary concern. Winds could also gust up to 60 mph in the stronger cells. Drivers are urged to stay alert to rapidly changing conditions, especially during the late-day commute.
Officials recommend securing outdoor items, avoiding travel during hailstorms, and having multiple ways to receive weather warnings. Conditions should quiet down Tuesday night once the front clears the region, but additional updates could follow if storm coverage increases.
