Grand Forks, ND – Severe thunderstorms packing heavy rain, gusty winds, and possible hail will continue overnight across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, raising concerns for flash flooding in the Red River Valley by daybreak Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 7 a.m. Friday for 23 counties, including Grand Forks, Cass, Traill, and Richland in North Dakota, and Becker, Polk, Mahnomen, and Roseau in Minnesota. Some storms could produce wind gusts over 50 mph and rainfall totals high enough to overwhelm already saturated ground.
Roadways in low-lying and rural areas could see rapid water accumulation, especially in southeastern North Dakota and west-central Minnesota. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded routes and delay non-essential travel until storms pass.
Conditions will improve Friday morning as skies clear, but another round of severe weather is possible Friday afternoon and evening, with all hazards on the table, including damaging winds and large hail.
Residents should keep phones charged, secure loose outdoor items, and monitor local alerts for updates as additional warnings may be issued.
