Grand Forks, ND – An Arctic air mass is sweeping across eastern North Dakota today, sending temperatures plunging and producing dangerously cold wind chills expected to last through tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, northwest winds of 12 to 25 mph are combining with frigid temperatures to create wind chills between 15 and 25 degrees below zero across much of the Red River Valley and surrounding areas. Morning flurries are possible, followed by partly cloudy skies and a brief period of calmer conditions this evening.
Daytime highs will struggle to reach the single digits, with most locations only climbing to between 5 and 11°F. Overnight lows will fall to around -5 to -13°F, with the coldest readings in northwestern counties such as Langdon, Devils Lake, and Baudette. Winds will gradually shift south by early Thursday, but the bitter cold will linger.
Residents are urged to dress in multiple layers, limit time outdoors, and protect exposed skin, as frostbite can occur within minutes under current conditions. Pet owners should ensure animals have adequate shelter and warmth, as wind chills will remain dangerously low into Thursday morning.
Forecasters note that temperatures are expected to moderate slightly later in the week, but overnight lows will continue to hover near zero through the weekend. No significant snow accumulation is expected, but patchy morning flurries may continue in some areas.
The National Weather Service advises checking local conditions before traveling and keeping emergency cold-weather supplies in vehicles, especially for rural drivers.
