Grand Forks, North Dakota – A winter system could bring 6 to 8 inches of snow Tuesday night into Thursday, potentially impacting travel along I-29 and US-2 across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a winter storm system is expected to approach the Northern Plains by the middle of next week. The main impacts are projected from Tuesday evening through Thursday as the system moves across the region.
Forecasters caution there remains considerable uncertainty in the storm’s track and precipitation type. A mix of rain and snow is possible, and where the rain-to-snow line sets up will determine final snow totals. Some areas could see around 1 inch of accumulation, while other locations may receive 6 to 8 inches or more.
The National Weather Service advises residents to be cautious of online snowfall maps showing totals of 10 inches or higher that are not official forecasts.
Roadways including Interstate 29 between Fargo and Grand Forks, Interstate 94 near Fargo, and U.S. Highway 2 toward Devils Lake and East Grand Forks could experience reduced visibility and snow-covered conditions if higher totals materialize.
Travel conditions may change quickly Tuesday night and Wednesday, particularly during evening and morning commute periods. College students, regional commuters, and freight drivers across the Red River Valley may experience delays depending on final snowfall amounts.
Updated forecasts are expected as confidence increases in the storm’s track and intensity early next week.
