Grand Forks, North Dakota — Light snow will continue across much of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota through New Year’s Eve night, creating slick travel conditions as residents head home from celebrations and into New Year’s Day.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, most areas have transitioned from a wintry mix to light snow, with visibility reductions and slick roads possible through mid-morning. Additional snowfall amounts of up to 2 inches are expected, mainly across portions of the northern and central Red River Valley. Patchy blowing snow may further reduce visibility in open areas.

The greatest impacts are expected near Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, Fargo, Grafton, Crookston, Ada, and Thief River Falls. Freezing drizzle may occasionally mix in through around 6 a.m., increasing the risk of icy spots.

Roadways likely to be affected include I-29, US-2, US-75, ND-200, MN-11, and MN-32, particularly on untreated stretches, bridges, and rural highways. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly during heavier snow bursts, especially late tonight.

Snow is expected to gradually taper by early New Year’s Day morning (Thursday), but cold temperatures may allow slick spots to persist into the morning hours.

The National Weather Service urges drivers traveling late on New Year’s Eve or early New Year’s Day to slow down, allow extra time, and check current road conditions via travel.dot.nd.gov or 511mn.org before heading out.
