Grand Forks, North Dakota — Blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility are expected across northern North Dakota on Friday as a band of snow moves west to east, accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, snow will spread across the region beginning Friday morning and continue through the evening hours. During periods of heavier snowfall, brief whiteout conditions are possible, particularly in open and rural areas where strong winds can easily lift and drift snow across roadways.
Forecasters said the most significant impacts are expected between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Friday, when gusty winds will combine with falling snow to reduce visibility to below one mile at times. Some areas could experience visibility under one-half mile during the heaviest bursts.
After a brief lull in winds late Friday afternoon and evening, a cold front is expected to push southward overnight. This will lead to renewed blowing snow from late Friday night into Saturday morning, further reducing visibility even after snowfall tapers off.
Road conditions may deteriorate quickly, especially on north-south routes where drifting snow could partially cover lanes. The National Weather Service advises drivers to use caution, reduce speed, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions if travel is necessary.
While snowfall totals are expected to remain relatively modest, officials emphasized that wind-driven snow will be the primary hazard. Areas of drifting could make some rural roads difficult to navigate, particularly overnight.
Commuters, students, and freight drivers traveling Friday afternoon and Friday night may experience the most significant impacts as winds strengthen and visibility drops.
