Grand Forks, North Dakota – Gusty winds are creating hazardous travel conditions across parts of the Red River Valley this afternoon, with icy spots developing on area roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, drifting snow in open country—particularly on the Minnesota side of the Red River Valley—is leading to snow blowing onto roadways. With temperatures starting relatively warm, that snow is melting on pavement and then refreezing, resulting in slick and icy spots.

The Weather Service said the highest risk for deteriorating travel conditions is now through late afternoon and early evening, especially for drivers traveling through open rural areas. Sudden changes in road conditions are possible, particularly where drifting snow is visible crossing the roadway.

Officials urge motorists to reduce speed, remain alert for rapidly changing conditions, and avoid using cruise control. Even brief stretches of ice can make stopping and steering difficult, especially at highway speeds.

The advisory highlights that conditions may appear manageable before quickly becoming hazardous, a common issue when melting snow refreezes on cold pavement. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and maintain safe following distances.

No winter storm warnings or advisories were issued with this update, but the National Weather Service emphasized that slippery roads could develop quickly without additional snowfall.

Communities across the eastern Red River Valley, including areas surrounding Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, and nearby rural highways, may be affected through the evening hours.

Motorists are advised to continue monitoring local road conditions and weather updates before traveling.
