Grand Forks, ND – Drivers across Grand Forks and the northern Red River Valley are being urged to use caution Saturday afternoon as blowing and drifting snow creates hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.
According to the NWS, gusty northwest winds are leading to localized blowing snow and widespread drifting, particularly in open country areas of northeastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. Visibility could drop to as low as one-half mile at times, making travel difficult, especially on rural highways.
The greatest impacts are expected across the Northern Red River Valley, including areas surrounding Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, and nearby rural roads. While snowfall amounts are not expected to be heavy, forecasters stress that existing snow combined with strong winds is enough to significantly reduce visibility.
The blowing and drifting snow is expected to persist through late Saturday afternoon, potentially affecting travel along key routes such as U.S. Highway 2, U.S. Highway 81, and surrounding county roads.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation and Minnesota Department of Transportation are urging motorists to check current road conditions before traveling and to slow down if visibility worsens. Sudden whiteout conditions may occur in open areas, especially during stronger wind gusts.
Officials recommend allowing extra travel time, keeping headlights on, and maintaining a safe following distance. Conditions are expected to gradually improve later in the day as winds begin to ease.
