Grand Forks, N.D. – Dangerous heat and humidity will grip much of eastern North Dakota on Thursday, with parts of the Red River Valley expected to reach a heat index of 100°F by late afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, strong south winds from 15 to 30 mph will usher in very warm and humid air. Dew points will climb into the low to mid-70s, pushing actual highs in the upper 80s to low 90s to feel even hotter—between 95° and 100° across counties including Grand Forks, Walsh, and Cass.
The cities of Grafton, Valley City, and Fargo are among those likely to experience the most intense heat. Devils Lake, Jamestown, and Lisbon are also expected to see heat indices well above 95°F. Wet Bulb Globe Temperatures (WBGT)—a measure of heat stress—will be in the low 80s, considered “high risk” for outdoor activity.
Residents are urged to limit time outside, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous work during peak afternoon hours. Employers should provide frequent breaks and shaded rest areas for outdoor workers.
Heat advisories may be issued if conditions worsen. Relief arrives late Thursday as temperatures drop slightly into the 70s by Friday morning.
