Grand Forks, North Dakota – Blowing snow and periods of low visibility are expected across parts of eastern North Dakota on Wednesday, creating potential travel impacts through the day.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, another round of light snow combined with increasing winds will affect areas along and west of the Red River Valley. While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light — generally a dusting up to 2 inches — wind gusts up to 45 mph may lead to blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility at times.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the affected areas from 6 a.m. Wednesday through 6 p.m., with forecasters warning that visibility could periodically fall below one-half mile, especially in open and rural areas. The highest impacts are expected during the morning and evening commute periods.
The NWS categorizes Wednesday’s conditions as a minor (level 1 of 4) winter weather risk, but notes that even minor snow combined with strong winds can quickly lead to dangerous driving conditions. Drivers may encounter rapidly changing visibility, drifting snow, and slick road surfaces.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, use headlights to improve visibility, and be prepared for sudden whiteout conditions. Young workers, students, and commuters traveling early or late Wednesday should monitor road conditions closely.
The National Weather Service urges residents to continue checking updated forecasts and advisories as conditions evolve throughout the day.
