Flagstaff, Ariz. – Visitors to the Grand Canyon and surrounding areas could face life-threatening flooding through Tuesday evening as daily thunderstorms drench northern Arizona. The National Weather Service has extended a Flood Watch for the Kaibab Plateau, Marble and Glen Canyons, and Grand Canyon Country, warning of dangerous runoff in slot canyons and over recent burn scars.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, storms will peak each afternoon and evening, with intense downpours capable of producing flash flooding in minutes. Areas scarred by the Dragon Bravo and White Sage fires are especially vulnerable, as dry soils there cannot absorb rainfall.

Communities including Page, Fredonia, Jacob Lake, Lees Ferry, and Grand Canyon Village may experience rapid water rises in washes, creeks, and low-water crossings. Side canyons along the Colorado River also pose a heightened risk, with raging currents possible for rafters and hikers.

Officials urge visitors to avoid slot canyons, monitor weather alerts closely, and reconsider outdoor plans in flood-prone areas. Travelers should keep alternate routes in mind and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads.

The Flood Watch remains in effect until Tuesday evening, and additional warnings could be issued as storms redevelop.
