Flagstaff, Arizona – Hikers and visitors to the Grand Canyon are facing one of the most dangerous heat waves of the year, with daytime highs expected to top 113°F at Phantom Ranch and 101°F at Havasupai Gardens through 7 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for the lower elevations of Grand Canyon Country, including North Rim, Grand Canyon Village, and Supai. The warning covers all areas below 4,000 feet until Sunday evening, with life-threatening conditions for anyone exposed to the elements without proper cooling or hydration.

Local agencies are urging travelers to avoid outdoor activity in the canyon between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hikers on Bright Angel Trail should descend no farther than 1½ miles from the rim and seek shade at Havasupai Gardens or Bright Angel campgrounds. The Park Service recommends carrying extra water, electrolyte mix, salty snacks, and wearing wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen. Doubling calorie intake helps maintain energy in extreme heat.

Officials warn that heat-related illness can strike quickly. Anyone experiencing signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should seek shade immediately—heat stroke is a medical emergency; call 911 if symptoms appear.

The Extreme Heat Warning will remain in effect until at least 7 p.m. Sunday, with further advisories possible if temperatures remain high.
