Goodland, Kansas – Bitter cold is sweeping across the High Plains early Tuesday, delivering the first widespread hard freeze of the fall from eastern Colorado into northwest Kansas. The National Weather Service in Goodland has continued a Freeze Warning through 10 a.m. MDT / 11 a.m. CDT Tuesday, covering Cheyenne County, Colorado, and Greeley, Logan, Wallace, and Wichita counties in Kansas.

According to forecasters, overnight lows have dropped into the mid-20s, with 26°F common before sunrise under clear skies and light winds. These subfreezing temperatures will damage unprotected crops, gardens, and outdoor plumbing, effectively bringing the 2025 growing season to an end across the region.

Residents are urged to cover tender vegetation, drain or wrap exposed pipes, and ensure outdoor pets have adequate shelter. The National Weather Service also recommends draining sprinkler systems or letting indoor faucets drip slowly to prevent freeze-related damage.

According to emergency management officials, temperatures will gradually rise by mid-morning, but another cold front could bring additional freezing nights later in the week. Farmers and ranchers across the northwest plains should plan for continued below-normal temperatures through the weekend.
