Springfield, MO – A round of severe thunderstorms is expected to impact southern Missouri late Saturday evening, with the National Weather Service warning of golf ball-sized hail and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.

According to the US National Weather Service in Springfield, storms are expected to develop Saturday evening and continue into the night, with the strongest activity concentrated along and south of Interstate 44. Areas under an enhanced risk include Springfield, Joplin, and West Plains.

The primary concern is large hail, with potential isolated instances of hail larger than golf balls. Wind gusts could reach damaging levels, posing threats to vehicles, roofs, and outdoor structures. A very conditional 2% tornado risk also exists, particularly in counties near the Arkansas border.

Residents are urged to remain weather-aware and ensure they have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts overnight. The storms could impact travel and cause localized power outages.

Historically, March severe weather in Missouri is not uncommon, but this system stands out due to the large hail potential. Storm intensity is expected to decrease by early Sunday morning.

Preparedness tips include securing outdoor items, sheltering vehicles, and avoiding travel during peak storm periods. Updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
