Glasgow, MT – A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for northeast Montana as a powerful cold front ushers in dangerously cold temperatures and extreme wind chills through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, the advisory runs from 11 a.m. today through 11 a.m. Sunday for much of northeast Montana. Temperatures are expected to fall rapidly into the single digits and teens this afternoon, with cold conditions persisting through tonight and Sunday.
Northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph will develop today and continue into tonight, significantly increasing the danger. As a result, wind chill values are expected to range from −20° to −40°, with the coldest conditions likely late tonight and Sunday morning, especially near the Canadian border.
At these wind chill levels, the National Weather Service warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in less than 30 minutes. Prolonged exposure can also lead to hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers of warm clothing, including hats and gloves, and ensure that all exposed skin is covered. Those who must be outside for work or travel should take frequent breaks in warm shelters.
Motorists should be prepared for extreme cold conditions if traveling, including ensuring vehicles are winter-ready with emergency supplies such as blankets, food, water, and a charged phone. Livestock owners should also take steps to protect animals from the cold and wind.
The cold weather is expected to continue through Sunday night before gradual improvement early next week. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.
The National Weather Service advises closely monitoring updates as the cold event continues.
