Glasgow, MT – Dangerous winter weather is expected across northeast Montana beginning Wednesday afternoon as a fast-developing storm brings heavy snow, extreme winds, and life-threatening whiteout conditions.
According to the National Weather Service Glasgow, snow will begin late Wednesday and intensify through the evening. Northwest winds of 35 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 70 mph, are forecast from 4 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday, creating full blizzard conditions across large portions of Valley, Phillips, Roosevelt, McCone, and surrounding counties.
Forecasters warn that the combination of blowing snow and powerful winds will produce near-zero visibility, making travel extremely hazardous and, at times, impossible. Roads may quickly become drifted over, particularly in open areas where wind speeds will be strongest. The Weather Service strongly discourages travel tonight due to the high probability of whiteouts and rapid snow accumulations.
Communities including Glasgow, Malta, Whitewater, Opheim, Scobey, Plentywood, Culbertson, Circle, Glendive, and Jordan fall under the Blizzard Warning. Snowfall amounts will vary, but the greater danger comes from blowing and drifting snow, which may create deep, unpredictable drifts across highways and rural roads.
Nighttime hazards pose the greatest risk, with conditions deteriorating after sunset. Emergency services may be delayed due to impassable travel routes, and residents are urged to avoid unnecessary trips, secure outdoor items, and prepare for potential power outages caused by strong winds.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Thursday morning as winds decrease and snowfall tapers, though cleanup and drifting may continue to impact travel through the day.
