GLASGOW, Mont. – Strong, dry winds are sweeping across northeastern Montana this afternoon, prompting both fire and marine hazards as the region endures another blustery fall day. Gusts near 45 mph are expected through the evening before easing overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Petroleum and Garfield counties, including the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, until 5 p.m. Sunday. Relative humidity values around 20% are combining with the strong southwest winds to heighten wildfire danger. A Lake Wind Advisory also continues until midnight, with waves on Fort Peck Lake building up to 6 feet.

High wind alerts were canceled earlier for southwest Phillips County as speeds began to diminish, but forecasters caution that elevated gusts and rapid wind shifts may persist into early Monday. The strongest winds are occurring from Glasgow to Jordan, where sustained speeds are between 25 and 35 mph with higher gusts topping 45 mph.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items, and use caution driving high-profile vehicles. Boaters on Fort Peck Lake should remain ashore until winds subside.

By Monday, winds will gradually weaken with cooler, calmer weather returning to the region. Fire danger should lower slightly as humidity levels rise.
