GLASGOW, Mont. – A powerful stretch of northwest winds that churned up Fort Peck Lake through Columbus Day is finally winding down, but residents across northeast Montana should brace for a sharp cooldown by Tuesday morning. Gusts topping 45 mph have battered lakeshore areas and made travel along U.S. Highway 2 challenging for high-profile vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, the Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. MDT Sunday, with 28–30 mph sustained winds easing late tonight. Boaters on Fort Peck Lake are urged to stay near sheltered coves until conditions improve. The weather service says rough waves could still swamp smaller craft.

By early Monday, calmer skies and lingering breezes will usher in a cooler, clearer pattern. Highs will hover in the mid-40s to low-50s, dropping into the 20s by late Monday night. According to forecasters, a stretch of sunny, dry weather will build through midweek — a welcome change for travelers and families wrapping up Columbus Day holiday plans and preparing for school and work commutes.

Drivers should remain alert to sudden gusts on I-2 and MT-24, particularly near open plains. As temperatures dip, residents are encouraged to dress in layers and check outdoor decorations or Halloween displays for wind damage. With frost possible midweek, gardeners should protect any remaining fall plants and cover outdoor faucets.

By late week, Montana’s fall charm returns: crisp mornings, bright afternoons, and perfect weather for pumpkin patches and leaf viewing.
