Glasgow, MT – Residents across northeast Montana are urged to prepare for a high-impact weather event as powerful winds and winter conditions return to the region midweek.

According to the National Weather Service office in Glasgow, a High Wind Watch is in effect beginning Wednesday morning through Wednesday night, with northwest wind gusts potentially reaching 70 mph. The strongest winds are expected from late Wednesday morning through the evening hours, affecting much of northeast Montana.

On Tuesday, conditions will remain relatively quiet ahead of the system, but forecasters warn this will be the calm before the storm. By Wednesday morning, winds are expected to rapidly increase, with sustained northwest winds of 35 to 45 mph developing across the region.

In addition to the damaging winds, blowing snow is likely, especially Wednesday night, when a round of snowfall moves into far northeast Montana. Near-whiteout conditions may develop at times, particularly in open and rural areas, making travel hazardous or impossible.

Forecasters also warn of dangerously cold wind chills, with values expected to drop below -20 degrees as colder air moves in behind the system. These conditions could pose a serious risk to anyone spending extended time outdoors.

The combination of strong winds and snow could result in localized power outages, drifting snow, and rapidly changing road conditions. Emergency officials encourage residents to secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind periods, and prepare emergency kits in case of power disruptions.

The National Weather Service advises closely monitoring forecast updates, as the High Wind Watch may be upgraded to warnings as confidence increases.
