Glasgow, Montana — Strong northwest winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions across northeast Montana as a High Wind Warning remains in effect through Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, winds will increase late tonight and continue into Wednesday, with sustained speeds of 25 to 40 mph and gusts reaching up to 60 mph. The warning covers most of northeast Montana, including the Glasgow area.

Forecasters warn that these winds may lead to localized blowing snow, especially in open and rural areas, which could rapidly reduce visibility even where new snowfall is limited. Sudden drops in visibility may make driving dangerous with little warning.

Roadways running north to south are expected to see the greatest impacts due to strong crosswinds. U.S. Highway 191 is specifically highlighted as a concern, where high-profile vehicles such as semis, campers, and trailers may have difficulty maintaining control. Portions of U.S. 2 and surrounding state highways may also be affected.

The strongest winds are expected overnight into the early morning hours Wednesday, before gradually diminishing later in the morning. The High Wind Warning is currently set to expire at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service advises motorists to use caution, reduce speeds, and keep both hands on the wheel. Drivers of light or high-profile vehicles are urged to delay travel if possible until winds ease.

For early-morning commuters, students, and freight drivers, the most hazardous conditions are expected during the Wednesday morning commute, when peak wind gusts and areas of blowing snow could combine to create dangerous travel conditions across the Glasgow area and much of northeast Montana.
