Glasgow, Montana — Strong west winds are expected to intensify across northeast Montana on Friday, with gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph and isolated gusts near 60 mph prompting a High Wind Warning in parts of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, winds will increase through Friday morning and persist into the afternoon, with sustained speeds of 25 to 35 mph across much of northeast Montana. Southwest Phillips County remains under a High Wind Warning until 5 p.m. Friday, where the strongest gusts are expected.

Forecasters said the powerful winds could create dangerous crosswinds, particularly along Highway 191 and other north-south routes. High-profile vehicles such as semitrailers, campers, and farm equipment may have difficulty maintaining control during peak wind periods.

The strongest gusts are forecast from late morning through midafternoon before gradually diminishing Friday evening. Wind-prone areas, including open plains and exposed roadways, are expected to experience the most significant impacts.

In addition to travel concerns, residents are advised to secure loose outdoor objects such as trash cans, holiday decorations, and lightweight equipment. Blowing debris and unsecured items could become hazards during periods of peak wind.

While no precipitation is expected, the combination of dry conditions and strong winds may also elevate fire-weather concerns in areas with dormant vegetation. Officials recommend avoiding activities that could spark fires until winds subside.

Commuters, agricultural workers, and truck drivers traveling Friday should plan for slower travel and remain alert for sudden gusts, especially during the afternoon hours.
