Glasgow and surrounding areas of northeast Montana are preparing for a significant wind event beginning Monday evening, with the National Weather Service issuing a High Wind Warning for Phillips County and nearby locations. The warning is in effect from 5 PM Monday through 11 AM Tuesday, as strong west winds rapidly increase overnight.
Sustained winds are expected to range from 25 to 35 miles per hour, with powerful gusts reaching up to 60 mph in the most exposed areas. The strongest winds are forecast from Monday evening through early Tuesday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions, particularly on north–south oriented roads where crosswinds will be strongest.
High-profile vehicles such as semis, campers, trailers, and box trucks are especially vulnerable during this event. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution, reduce speed, and delay travel if possible during peak wind hours. Even lighter vehicles may experience sudden gusts that make steering difficult, especially in open country and along highways.
Beyond travel concerns, residents should take steps to secure loose outdoor items, including trash cans, holiday decorations, and lightweight equipment that could become airborne. Power disruptions are also possible where winds are strongest, particularly if gusts impact power lines or infrastructure.
While temperatures are not the main concern with this system, the combination of strong winds and cold air will make conditions feel harsher overnight and early Tuesday. Winds are expected to gradually ease late Tuesday morning as the system moves east.
For Glasgow-area residents, Monday evening marks the start of the most dangerous period. Staying weather-aware, adjusting travel plans, and securing property ahead of time will be key to staying safe as this high wind event unfolds.
