KANKAKEE – A 12-year-old girl is dead after a reported self inflicted gunshot wound Friday evening.

According to Kankakee City Police, it happened just before 9pm Friday in the 2200 block of W. Bourbonnais Street after investigators say the girl found an unsecured firearm inside a home and harmed herself with it.

“Upon arrival, the family informed officers that their child was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” City Police said in a press release Saturday. “Officers entered the residence and located the 12-year-old victim laying on the floor with an apparent gunshot wound.”

The girl was transported to Riverside Medical Center where she died as a result of her injury.

The incident remains under investigation with the both Coroner’s Office and City Police.
