Gillette, Wyo. – Thick wildfire smoke is reducing air quality across northeast Wyoming this morning, with health officials urging residents to stay indoors until conditions improve by midday Friday.

According to the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Health, an Air Quality Alert is in effect for Campbell, Crook, Weston, and surrounding counties through noon. Cities under the advisory include Gillette, Moorcroft, Hulett, Sundance, Upton, Osage, and Newcastle.

Officials warn that fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke can trigger breathing difficulties, especially for children, older adults, and those with asthma or heart conditions. Residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor exercise and limit time outside until the alert expires.

In Gillette and Wright, haze has been visible since early morning, with reduced visibility also reported near Devils Tower and the Wyoming Black Hills. Local health agencies advise keeping windows closed, running air conditioners on recirculate, and using indoor air filters where possible.

The Air Quality Division continues to monitor conditions and notes that additional advisories could be issued if smoke persists beyond Friday.
