Peachtree City, Georgia – Light snowfall is creating hazardous travel conditions across portions of Georgia Sunday morning, as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the advisory runs until 1 p.m. EST Sunday and covers portions of east-central, north-central, northeast, and west-central Georgia. Forecasters expect snow accumulations up to one inch, with the greatest impacts occurring on untreated roads and elevated surfaces.
The advisory includes Madison, Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Wilkes, Walton, and Troup counties, affecting communities such as Athens, Watkinsville, Monroe, Washington, Comer, Crawford, and West Point. While snowfall amounts are limited, temperatures near freezing may allow snow to accumulate briefly on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.
The National Weather Service warns that slippery road conditions are likely, especially during the morning hours. Even light snow in Georgia can lead to travel disruptions due to limited winter road treatment and reduced driver familiarity with snow-covered roads.
Snow is expected to taper off by early afternoon, but slick spots may persist for several hours afterward, particularly in shaded areas and on less-traveled routes. Visibility reductions may occur briefly during periods of steadier snowfall.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time if travel is necessary. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances, especially between urban corridors and rural roadways.
The Georgia Department of Transportation recommends checking current road conditions by dialing 511 before traveling. While this event is not expected to produce significant accumulation, even minor snowfall can have outsized travel impacts across the region.
