Peachtree City, Georgia – A widespread Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across much of Georgia as snow, gusty winds, and dangerously cold temperatures are expected to create hazardous to impossible travel conditions through early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, snowfall totals will range from 1 to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts in north Georgia, beginning Friday evening and continuing through early Sunday morning, depending on location. Wind gusts up to 35 mph are expected statewide, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

In north Georgia, including Fannin, Union, Towns, Lumpkin, Dawson, and White counties, snowfall totals of 4 to 6 inches are expected, with colder wind chills plunging below zero Saturday night. Mountain communities such as Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Dahlonega, and Cleveland are expected to see the most severe conditions.

Across central and east-central Georgia, including Athens, Gainesville, Lawrenceville, Winder, Monroe, Madison, Milledgeville, and Eatonton, 3 to 5 inches of snow are forecast. The Atlanta metro area, including Atlanta, Marietta, Decatur, Sandy Springs, and Conyers, may see up to 2 inches, enough to cause widespread road impacts due to limited treatment capability.

Farther south and east, including Emanuel, Johnson, Laurens, and Treutlen counties, snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with slick bridges and overpasses likely.

Forecasters warn that travel will be very difficult to impossible, particularly overnight Friday into Saturday. Snow-covered roads, icy bridges, and blowing snow will create rapidly changing conditions. Extremely cold wind chills — ranging from 5 to 15 degrees below zero in north Georgia and near zero elsewhere — increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Residents are urged to delay all travel if possible and remain indoors. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies and check road conditions by calling 511. Officials also advise dressing in layers and covering exposed skin when outdoors.

This winter storm is expected to cause widespread disruptions across Georgia, including possible road closures, delays, and prolonged hazardous conditions through the weekend.
