Atlanta, Georgia – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across central Georgia this afternoon, bringing gusty winds, intense lightning, and heavy downpours capable of sparking flash flooding in low-lying areas and cities prone to drainage issues.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the highest risk for strong storms will stretch from Columbus through Macon to Athens between 3 p.m. and midnight. While the overall threat level remains low (Category 1), individual storms could still produce damaging winds up to 60 mph, especially outside of the wedge-influenced area northeast of Atlanta where cooler air may suppress activity.

Cities such as LaGrange, Macon, and Warner Robins are in the zone most likely to experience the worst of today’s weather. Urban flooding, downed limbs, and isolated power outages may occur. Flash flooding could be especially problematic near creeks, underpasses, and poorly drained roads during periods of heavy rainfall.

Residents should remain weather-aware into tonight and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Storms will begin tapering off after midnight, but more unsettled weather could return early next week.
