Atlanta, Georgia – Parts of Georgia are now seeing a growing winter weather threat as a strengthening storm system takes aim at the Southeast this weekend. Confidence is increasing that northeast Georgia and portions of central Georgia could experience winter impacts from Saturday into Sunday, with the risk continuing to trend upward.

According to the National Weather Service, probabilities for at least minor winter weather impacts range from 40% to as high as 70% across northeast Georgia, with lower but increasing odds extending into central Georgia, including the Atlanta metro. Snow is the primary concern in higher elevations north and northeast of Atlanta, while areas farther south could see a mix that raises the risk for slick roads.

Travel impacts are the main concern as temperatures drop near freezing during the expected precipitation window. Routes such as I-75, I-85, I-20, and U.S. 23 could become hazardous, particularly late Saturday night into early Sunday. Georgia Department of Transportation crews are monitoring conditions closely and preparing for possible treatment operations.

Residents are encouraged to prepare now by limiting weekend travel plans, charging devices, and ensuring access to essential supplies. Even light snowfall or brief icing can cause significant problems on Georgia roadways.

Forecasters stress that confidence is still increasing, and the risk level may continue to rise as the storm evolves. Additional advisories or warnings are possible as the system develops, with impacts potentially lasting into Sunday.
