Atlanta, Georgia – Drivers across western and central Georgia are being urged to stay off the roads Monday as up to 6 inches of rain continues to pound the region, raising the risk of flash flooding through 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with isolated pockets receiving as much as 6 inches. The Flood Watch remains in effect for the western two-thirds of the state, including metro Atlanta, Macon, Columbus, and Newnan.
Low-lying roads, small creeks, and urban areas are especially vulnerable, with water already pooling in several communities early Monday. Emergency officials warn that flooded roadways may become impassable and advise residents to avoid all non-essential travel. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the message from Georgia DOT and local emergency managers.
Rain is expected to ease late tonight, but isolated flash flood warnings may still be issued throughout the day as runoff pushes small waterways beyond capacity.
More updates may follow if rainfall intensifies or if rivers approach flood stage.
