Georgia – Snowflakes drift sideways in stiff northwest winds as winter tightens its grip across north and central Georgia. Pavement darkens. Trees creak. Conditions are changing fast, and travel impacts are building.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning alongside an Extreme Cold Warning for the Atlanta metro and much of north and central Georgia. Snow showers are already developing, with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible, and locally higher amounts north of the city. Wind gusts up to 35 mph will reduce visibility and create blowing snow.

Temperatures hover near freezing early, but colder air surges in quickly. Wind chills drop toward zero tonight, especially in elevated and open areas. Roads that briefly warm during the day may refreeze rapidly after sunset, increasing the risk of flash freezing on interstates like I-75, I-85, and I-20.

Meteorologists are tracking the core of Arctic air pushing unusually far south. The cold follows an intensifying coastal storm to the east, reinforcing winter conditions across Georgia. Travel could become hazardous by evening, with slick roads and poor visibility likely during heavier snow bursts.

Sunday turns brighter but stays cold. Highs reach the mid-30s, though wind chills remain harsh. By Monday, sunshine returns and temperatures rebound into the 40s. The warmup accelerates midweek, with highs pushing into the 50s by Tuesday and Wednesday.

Still, winter is not finished. Another system may bring rain by midweek, followed by renewed cold late in the week. February opens with sharp temperature swings across the Southeast.

Limit unnecessary travel, prepare for power disruptions, and protect pets and pipes. Conditions may deteriorate quickly after sunset. Are you seeing snow or icy roads where you are?
