Georgia begins the day under thick clouds and biting cold, with damp air already clinging to roads and trees. What looks manageable now will not stay that way. Ice begins building quickly later today, setting the stage for one of the most disruptive winter events of the season.

Atlanta, Georgia – An Ice Storm Warning is in effect across much of north and central Georgia, stretching from the north Georgia mountains through metro Atlanta and east toward Athens. According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, ice accumulations ranging from one-quarter inch to as much as one inch are expected, with isolated higher totals possible. The warning runs from early today through Monday morning, with winds gusting up to 35 mph in some areas.

Once freezing rain sets in, conditions will deteriorate fast. Major routes including I-75, I-85, I-20, and GA-400 are likely to become slick, especially on bridges and elevated ramps. Travel may become nearly impossible as ice thickens and visibility drops. To be fair, a few areas could see brief lulls, but any melting will refreeze quickly after dark.

Power outages are a growing concern. Ice-coated trees and power lines may snap under the combined weight of ice and wind. Crews could struggle to respond while roads remain hazardous, extending outages into early next week.

Residents across Atlanta, Marietta, Gainesville, Athens, Rome, Dalton, and Lawrenceville are urged to finish preparations now. Charge devices, secure heat-safe supplies, and avoid unnecessary travel. Check on older neighbors and never use generators or grills indoors.

The storm lingers into Monday morning before gradual improvement begins. Cleanup and restoration will likely take time even after precipitation ends.

Are roads already icing where you live, or are conditions still holding for now?
