Georgia — Dry air cracks lips and rustles leaves across north and central Georgia this morning, even as winter quietly reloads. Sunshine helps early, but the calm won’t last long.
Temperatures started near freezing in Atlanta, hovering around 31 degrees early. According to the National Weather Service, low humidity and light winds bring an elevated fire danger risk today across much of north and central Georgia. Outdoor burning is discouraged, especially this afternoon as humidity drops further.
Conditions shift quickly by Thursday. Clouds increase, and showers move in late, pushing highs into the low 50s. Roads turn wet, but temperatures remain safely above freezing through most of the day. That changes Friday night as colder air begins draining south.
By Saturday, the setup becomes more complicated. Rain becomes more widespread by afternoon, with highs near 40. As colder air deepens Saturday night, rain may mix with sleet and freezing rain, especially north of I-20 and around the Atlanta metro. Pavement temperatures drop fast after sunset, raising the risk for icy bridges and ramps.
Sunday keeps winter in place. Freezing rain remains possible early, followed by cold rain at times. Highs struggle into the mid-30s. Even light icing could cause travel issues, power disruptions, and slick sidewalks. Plan extra time and avoid unnecessary travel late Saturday into Sunday morning.
Nationally, a strong Arctic blast grips much of the eastern U.S. in the 6–10 day outlook. While Georgia avoids the coldest air, temperatures trend below normal next week with continued precipitation chances.
