Georgia – Damp streets, gray skies, and a quiet chill early are misleading signs of what’s building across north and central Georgia. Showers fade, clouds break, and colder air pours in fast. By nightfall, the air turns crisp, and winter makes its presence clear.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, scattered showers linger early today before clearing. Temperatures peak in the low to mid-50s across metro Atlanta, then fall sharply tonight as northwest winds usher in colder air. Very cold wind chills are expected by Thursday morning, with readings between 8 and 15 degrees in parts of north Georgia.

Light snow is possible in the north Georgia mountains this evening through early Thursday. Flurries may extend as far south as the I-20 corridor, though up to one inch of snow is mainly expected above 2,500 feet. Significant travel impacts are unlikely, but drivers in higher elevations should remain cautious, especially on mountain roads.

Across Atlanta and surrounding suburbs, the primary concern is the freeze. Overnight lows drop into the low 20s, cold enough to impact exposed pipes, pets, and sensitive plants. Any lingering moisture on roads could refreeze, creating isolated slick spots early Thursday.

Thursday turns sunny but sharply colder. Highs struggle to reach the upper 30s, and gusty winds add a biting edge. Another cold night follows, keeping freeze concerns in place through early Friday. Conditions improve Friday afternoon, with sunshine and highs rebounding into the upper 40s.

Looking ahead, additional light snow is possible in the north Georgia mountains late Friday night into Saturday, while metro areas stay dry. Longer-range outlooks suggest colder-than-normal air holds into early next week.

Heading out tonight or early Thursday? Dress for the cold and use caution on bridges. How cold did it feel where you live?
